Where it is and when it is open
The checkpoint is in the Pskov region, at km 59 of the A-212 — the Riga — Pskov road, European route E77. On the Russian side the nearest village is Shumilkino; on the Estonian side it is Lütä in Setomaa parish, Võru county, where the Luhamaa checkpoint stands. Pskov is about 55 km away, Võru about 30.
The crossing does not work around the clock
The Russian side formally works without a break, but Estonia's Luhamaa has been open only from 7:00 to 19:00 Estonian time since 24 February 2026, and since the end of August this schedule has been indefinite. You cannot cross here at night. In winter, from the last Sunday of October, that is 8:00–20:00 Moscow time.
Who crosses and what control there is
Shumilkino is a multilateral road checkpoint: citizens of any country and vehicles of any registration may use it. Border, customs and other kinds of control of people and goods are carried out here.
- Pedestrians — the crossing can be made on foot, without a car.
- Cars — including those with Estonian, Latvian and other foreign plates.
- Freight transport — with a separate bay for in-depth inspection and weighing stations.
How the site is laid out
- passport and customs control zones;
- areas for checking private cars and coaches;
- an in-depth inspection bay for lorries and weighing stations.

Practical points
Useful to know in advance
- The queue for leaving Estonia is booked. If you drive from Estonia to Russia, the crossing time at Luhamaa is booked in advance in the GoSwift system at eestipiir.ee. In the other direction, from Russia to Estonia, and for pedestrians no booking is needed. The rules change — check them before the trip.
- Peak times. At weekends, on holidays and in the holiday season the queues are longer, and GoSwift slots for those days are taken early. For the current situation, look at travellers' chats and forums.
- After closing — nowhere to go. There is almost nothing near the crossing on either side, and no scheduled transport at Luhamaa either. If you miss 19:00, you will have to spend the night in Pskov or Pechory, or in Võru on the Estonian side — so plan the journey with time to spare.
Transfers to and from the crossing
Our car does not cross the border: we drive you to the crossing, you go through control yourself, and a second car meets you on the other side. On the Estonian side — Luhamaa — Tallinn for €160 and Luhamaa — Narva for €200. On the Russian side — Shumilkino — Pskov for ₽3,000, to Petersburg for ₽17,000 and from Ivangorod, bypassing Narva, for ₽25,000. The price is for the whole car.
FAQ
Is Shumilkino open 24 hours?
No. The Russian side is formally open around the clock, but Estonia's Luhamaa is open from 7:00 to 19:00 Estonian time, so the border can only be crossed in the daytime. The schedule has been indefinite since the end of August 2026.
Can I cross Shumilkino — Luhamaa on foot?
Yes. Pedestrians are let through on a par with cars. Just bear in mind that there is no scheduled transport at the crossing on either side: it is best to book a car to and from the border in advance.
Do I need to book the queue in GoSwift at Luhamaa?
Only if you leave Estonia for Russia by car: the time is booked in advance at eestipiir.ee. Entering Estonia from Russia and crossing on foot need no booking.
How do I call the Shumilkino customs post?
The Shumilkino checkpoint customs post's phone is +7 (81148) 983-69, post code 10209060. Public visiting hours are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 14:00 to 16:00; it is best to call before a visit.
